Primera Division- The home of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

The Primera Division is Spain’s top professional football league and is sometimes also known as La Liga or to use its full branded name, La Liga Santander.

It is annually contested by 20 teams with the bottom three teams being relegated to the Segunda Division. They’re then replaced by the top two ranked teams from the Segunda plus the winner of a Play-Off.

Each team in the division plays every other team in the division twice with one match played at home and the other one away. The order of the fixtures is randomly generated by a computer.

The Primera Division is currently one of the most watched domestic leagues in the world across all sports in terms of the average number of fans attending live matches, with only the English Premier League and the Bundesliga having more within Europe. And that’s hardly surprising considering the talent currently playing there. The likes of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, James Rodriguez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres, some of football’s premium players all currently play in Spain’s top division.

Since the Primera Division started in 1929, the biggest rivalry has been between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Their rivalry is not only explained by the fact that they are Spain’s biggest clubs with largest stadiums and greatest number of supporters but also by the fact that they are the most successful clubs in terms of Primera titles: Real Madrid have 32 and Barcelona 24 though Barcelona have been slightly more successful in recent years.
