Boxing – Uppercut those big odds

One of the first sports to be contested at professional level and one that remains an extremely dangerous occupation but one that fascinates millions of boxing fans worldwide. Elite boxers need to possess strength, speed, stamina and of course the ability to throw punches as well as take them. They also need to be good decision-makers and decide whether their best chance of winning the bout is via knockout or by trying to get more points than their opponent.
Boxing is always divided into weight categories so as it to allow fighters to box at the same physical level as themselves. The lightest category of all is the light minimum weight (just 46 kilos) and the heaviest is the cruiserweight (90 kilos) though there’s a further category called heavyweight which as no weight limit. Heavyweight is the most popular category of pro boxing and the one that has produced the most household names including: Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Sonny Liston and more recently…David Haye, Vladimir Klitschko, Vitali Klitschko and Tyson Fury.
That said, many fans feel that the sport is at its most thrilling at the welterweight division where lighter, faster boxers like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao deliver far more punches during the fight than you’d get at heavyweight.
Boxing has four main organisations: the WBA, the IBF, the WBC and the WBO. Each of them has its own world championship at each weight division.
