EuroLeague- Europe’s elite basketball competition

The EuroLeague is Europe’s premium men’s basketball competition and has been a permanent fixture on the European basketball calendar since 2000-01, when the newly-established ULEB organization took it over from the FIBA EuroLeague enterprise.

The competition is now called Turkish Airlines EuroLeague after it started being sponsored by Turkish Airlines in 2010 and will continue to be sponsored by it up until 2020.

As of 2016 the competition is contested by 16 teams, with 11 of them always entering the group phase based on having an A License, which in turn is based on performances, attendances and TV revenue. Teams included in this elite group are Barcelona, CSKA Moscow, Real Madrid, Olympiacos, Fenerbahce and, of course, Lithuania’s own Zalgiris Kaunas.

Although two other Lithuanian powerhouses Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius and Neptunas Klaipeda have also occasionally played in Europe’s elite basketball competition, Zalgiris has never missed a single EuroLeague season ever since it entered the competition in 1998. In fact, it was in its very first season that Zalgiris lifted its first and yet only EuroLeague trophy.

Who takes part in the EuroLeague is determined by performance in the competition over the past three domestic seasons though the winner of the lower-tier EuroCup also gets a place in the EuroLeague.

The current format sees the 16 teams playing in the same regular season group with each team playing each other twice. The top eight then progress to the quarter-finals before the semis and final are contested to find the winner in the Final 4 tournament.
