LKL - All the odds on Lithuanias’s top basketball league

The LKL stands for Lietuvos krepšinio lyga and is Lithuania’s top basketball league.

It was founded in 1993 by the Lithuanian Basketball Federation - Lithuania’s oldest professional sports organization and in particular with the assistance of Lithuanian basketball legend Šarūnas Marčiulionis, who played in the NBA for almost a decade and won Olympic Gold in Seoul in 1988.

In its inaugural season it was made up of 10 teams and the 1993 champions were Žalgiris, who had been by far the most successful side in the league’s history. Only one other side has ever won the LKL; the Lietuvos rytas, who last tasted glory in the 2009-10 season.

Great players to have featured in the LKL over the years include Žydrūnas Ilgauskas, Arvydas Sabonis, Šarūnas Jasikevičius, Arvydas Macijauskas, Ramūnas Šiškauskas, Darius Songaila, Saulius Štombergas, the American duo Tyus Edney and Antony Bowie and many others.

Since 2014-15 each of the teams in the LKL play 40 games a season with their league positions determining which European competition they qualify to play in: the Euroleague, EuroCup, Basketball Champions League or FIBA Europe Cup.
